While Walter deals with Peter’s disappearance, he tells Olivia’s niece, Ella, a musical tale reminiscent of a detective noir story. A private investigator (Olivia) takes the case of her latest client (Rachel) to look for her missing boyfriend (Peter). Peter is on the run with an artificial heart in his possession. Olivia looks for clues regarding Peter from a police lieutenant (Broyles). Finding a symbol leading to Massive Dynamic, she meets Nina Sharp who tells Peter is a conman who’s involved in industrial espionage. When Olivia contacts Rachel, she discovers her client dead with her heart missing. Olivia uses Rachel’s notebook to trace a scientist (Walter) who reveals that he sent Rachel to look for her. He reveals that he created inventions which benefit humanity, one of which is an artificial heart. However, the heart is stolen and Peter is suspected of having taken it. Later Olivia is assaulted by a man (Observer) who warns her not to get involved. With her assistant (Astrid), Olivia tracks down the weapon used on her to Nina. After she distrusts Nina’s information, she follows the woman back to her home. Olivia eavesdrops on Nina reporting to the founder William Bell on Peter’s whereabouts and is knocked out. Nina and the Observer attempt to drown Olivia but she is rescued by Peter. He tells Olivia that Walter is responsible for stealing dreams from children for his inventions and replacing them with nightmares. He also reveals that the heart belongs to him and he only lent it to Walter. The Observers attack them and Peter’s heart is taken during the fight. Olivia manages to repair him temporarily. They eventually discover that Walter was the one who sent the Observers to retrieve the heart. Walter pleads for Peter’s forgiveness but Peter refuses. Ella is disappointed by this ending and changes it to a happy one, with Walter, Peter and Olivia living happily ever after. The episode ends with Walter returning home while the Observer notes the disappearance of Peter.
